The Short List

by Michele Wesdock Filed Under: The Short List, Uncategorized Leave a Comment

There are so many amazing art prints at ScoutMob, an Atlanta-based site for independent artists.  Everything is highly curated and top-notch.  They also carry clothing, bags, candles, lighting, jewelry…I could go on and on.

And last but but not least, the @UglyFruitAndVeg Campaign wants us to stop wasting produce simply because it’s not “perfect.”  If you’re a fan of farmer’s markets, you’ll love this cheeky feed.

The Art of Clutter

by Michele Wesdock Filed Under: Accesories, Art, Blog, Living Rooms, My Home, Uncategorized 2 Comments

Art of Clutter

Who’s had this experience?  You go someone’s home and maybe this person doesn’t follow design trends or spend much time rearranging things or reading decorating blogs…And maybe for this person, the word “domino’ refers to a game and maybe they wouldn’t know how to pronounce “ikat” if you paid them.  But, there’s something about their home or maybe just that one room that is so comfortable and relaxing and maybe you can’t put your finger on it but you want to curl up with a cup of coffee and just stay a while.  And even though it’s not your “style” or even very “stylish” by Elle Decor standards, you just love being in that room.

Nate Berkus Collage Nate Berkus/The Things That Matter

My grandparent’s library is just this sort of room.  I don’t have a photo because my grandmother would think I was a kook if I wanted to take a picture of this cluttered room where they read their mail and lounge with the newspaper, but it’s that very word clutter that I think gives a room personality and appeal.  My grandparent’s floor to ceiling bookshelves are quite literally stuffed with books and the walls are covered with paintings and collections from their travels.  The round table in the center of the room is covered with books, magazines and plants and surrounded by chairs that don’t match in either size or scale.  But this room is so darn cozy and most importantly, you can learn so much about my grandparents just by looking around the room.

As design enthusiasts, it’s so easy to get caught up in the idea of perfection that it’s easy to forget that room should represent the people who live there.  Decorating is about beautiful colors and fabrics and shapes and textures but at it’s heart, it’s about people. Artful clutter, clutter that’s intentional and purposeful, can add life and warmth and personality and that “certain something” to a room that might otherwise be beautiful but somehow bland.  Artful clutter sends the message that rooms are for living in and that “things” are meant to be enjoyed and touched and loved.  Books, plants, collections of stones or shells, pottery, vintage perfume bottles, whatever you like to collect…all of these things say “welcome to my home, this is who I am and I’m sharing myself with you.”

Emily Henderson via Apartment Therapy

So what’s the difference between “artful clutter” and just plain clutter?  Here’s some takeaways.

  • Clutter should be intentional.   Dirty dishes in the sink are not a collection.  A display of hand glazed pottery is.
  • Clutter should be controlled.  Mail thrown on the table is not controlled.  Mail in a hand carved wooded bowl is.
  • Clutter should be unique or special in some way.  Although I have millions of Legos and Star Wars men all over the house, sadly they are not an artful collection.
  • Elevate everyday objects. A collection of shells in a purple dollar store sand bucket is not an artful collection.  Put them in a handmade pottery bowl and they become something special.

Work With Me

by Michele Wesdock Filed Under: Uncategorized Leave a Comment

Welcome to Moonefield Interiors!  If you’re reading this page, there’s a chance you might be thinking about hiring a decorator.  It can be a little scary at first, right?  You may be asking yourself questions like “What if she doesn’t understand my style?” and “What if she goes over my budget?” Or you may be thinking “I don’t even know how this all works!”

Relax. I can promise that our work together will be a collaboration and a continuous conversation about what’s best for you and your home. I’m passionate about listening to my clients first, in order to help them create a comfortable, stylish space that functions beautifully and feels personal. If you’re confused about your style, we’ll look at Pinterest ideas and design books together.  I’ll always keep your project within our prearranged budget.   And I have a step-by-step process so you’ll always know what’s happening next.

Whether you need a little design help or a lot, I can help guide you toward making the right decisions for your home and your space.  I have several packages to choose from, from consultation to full-service design. You can view all of the options as well as schedule your first consultation here.

Each consultation begins with by delving into the purpose of the room.  After determining the function and needs for the space, we’ll focus on the color scheme, fabrics and the many details that make the space beautiful and unique.

As a busy mom of two, I understand what families need from their homes.  I specialize in interiors that are both relaxed and sophisticated and I’d love to help you create a space that suits your particular needs.  I believe that your home should be a haven, a refuge from the daily stresses and hustle and bustle of life.  If you feel unsatisfied with the way your home looks, feels, or functions then you can’t feel relaxed and comfortable in your haven.

Maybe you’re starting a room from scratch and don’t know where to begin.  Maybe you just need help polishing a space to help it look “finished.” Maybe you aren’t sure what you need but you know that something just isn’t working. I can help!  Please go to this page to schedule and confirm your first consultation and learn more about my services

I look forward to working with you!

Preparing for Your Consultation

by Michele Wesdock Filed Under: Uncategorized Leave a Comment

If you’ve already booked an appointment for a design consultation, there are several things you can do ahead of time to plan for your appointment.  A little preparation can go a long way when it comes to making the most of our time together and having all of your questions answered.  You don’t want to waste time discussing one room when your priority project is actually another.  Keeping these points in mind will help us accomplish more during our meeting.

  1. We’ll first talk briefly on the phone about what room or rooms you have problems with and what you’d like to accomplish.
  2. Before our first appointment, you can create a Pinterest board and/or clip magazine pictures that appeal to you.  I’ll bring books, fabric swatches and paint samples for you to view as well.
  3. Prioritize your rooms and dilemmas and narrow your focus to 1-3 spaces.  This will allow us to “dig deep” and have a productive session. I’m happy to discuss more rooms as time permits.
  4. Think about the mood and the feeling you’d like the space to evoke.  Relaxed?  Sophisticated? Soothing? Welcoming? Energetic and fun?
  5. Think about function as well as decor.  Who uses the room?  Would you like a cozy corner for reading? Do you have pets? Do your children need a convenient spot for homework?  Do you entertain in the space?
  6. Think about what you’d like to keep and what you’d like to replace.  Do you want to repaint? Update your drapery? Keep the artwork but replace the sofa?
  7.  Write down your questions and discussion topics so that you don’t forget any important points.
  8.  I’ll take detailed notes throughout the consultation and by the end of our meeting, you’ll have a working plan for moving forward with your projects!
  9. We can continue to collaborate or you can keep the notes and work on your own.
  10. If you’d like to move forward with me, we’ll arrange the next meeting and begin to put plans in place.

If you’re unsure about some of these answers, don’t worry.  Together we’ll figure out what your space needs and how to get there.  I look forward to working with you!

I post this photo every Veteran’s Day. My grandfather has since passed away, but five years ago I had the privilege of watching my oldest son present a flag to him at our school’s Veteran’s Day ceremony. My grandfather, a WWII vet and German POW, was honored as the oldest veteran in attendance. At only 19 years old, his plane was shot down and after hiding and evading the Germans for several weeks, he was captured and held for several months. After the war, he returned to his studies at Virginia Virginia tech and met and married my grandfather. I will treasure this photo always ❤️🇺🇸 #veteransday #veterans #wwii #wwiiveteran #pow #westsideelementaryschool #westsideelementary #thegreatestgeneration #virginiatech #virginiatechalumni #wwiipow #family #scouts#boyscouts #cubscouts #smithfieldva
