Autumn Inspired Room Board

by Michele Wesdock Filed Under: Accesories, Art, Design Boards, Etsy, fabric, Living Rooms, styling Leave a Comment

And they’re off!  In these parts, school doesn’t begin until after Labor Day, so that first day definitely feels like a signal that fall is right around the corner.  To me, it’s also a time to refocus on my own plans and goals, like getting my design business and portfolio up and running along with more regular blog postings.  To that end, I’ve been working on featuring room board and color schemes more often, because I think they’re so helpful when trying to envision a space and pull elements together for a cohesive plan.

This room board is inspired by the natural elements and warm tones that we’re all drawn to this time of year.  World Market is killing it lately with their selection of low-cost kilim area rugs and I used the Alina rug as a jumping off point for a warm, textural space. It’s only 5 x 8, but would look great layered over a larger natural weave jute rug.

I pulled the olive green, golden yellow and red from the rug to create a cozy and warm fall palette.  And of course, an autumn room wouldn’t be complete without a chunky hand knit throw!

How to Style a Coffee Table Tray

Tray Styling

I’ve been looking for the perfect tray for my living coffee table for a while with no luck.  Then last week, I was at West Elm with a friend and I found the perfect tray on sale! If you have a West Elm nearby, shopping in-store is the best way to go because this tray was reduced to $35 although it’s $59 online. It’s just what I was looking for.  I love the way the texture contrasts with the smooth and simple lines of my glass coffee table.

I like to style a coffee table tray with interesting objects and conversation pieces, since people are sitting on the sofa right in front it.  I love these two vintage geography textbooks.  One is from 1877!  The worn covers add texture and interest in a way newer books can’t.  Then I added height with greenery and the glass and metal box.  The lab beaker is from a vintage shop but can also be found on Etsy.   The candle and glass box are from TJ Maxx (bought years ago!) and the things inside the box are objects I’ve collected over the years.  The turtle shell and brass magnifying glass/paperweight were mentioned in this post.

Here’s a few tips for successful tray styling:

1. An odd number objects are more pleasing to the eye

2. Use interesting conversation pieces

3. Add greenery , like a potted plant, fresh flowers or a snip of something from the yard

4. Very the height objects to keep the vignette from feeling “flat”

5. Place small objects on books so they don’t get “lost”

6. Use some natural, organic pieces to add texture and interest

7. Shop your house!  I didn’t buy anything here except the tray

How to Style Glass Bookshelves

I recently gave my Ikea Vittsjo shelving unit (spray painted gold) a makeover for summer.  As much as I love bookshelves stuffed with books, a delicate shelf like this one, made of glass and metal with an open back, needs a lighter hand when it comes to styling.  A combination of books, accessories, art and natural elements gave this shelf the airier look it needed.

Here’s some tips for creating a similar look.

1. Use lighter colored books.  Dark  books can weigh down a delicate shelving unit.

2. Turn books with “unattractive” spines toward the wall with the pages facing out.   The pages also add interesting texture!

3. Stick to books in one color palette. Here, I used books in shades of blue green and white.

4. Shop your house for books or find interesting, attractive books at the thrift store.

5. Keep larger books on the bottom shelves to keep a balanced look.

5. Treat each shelf as an individual vignette.  Very the size of your accessories and create height by placing objects on top of stacked books.

6. Layer in artwork. Lean larger frames behind books and accessories.  Hang smaller art on the wall so it doesn’t get “lost.”

7. Use plants and other organic elements to add texture and life. Fake plants are great on a shelf!

8.  Accessories should be meaningful or interesting but they don’t have to be expensive.  You can find everything you need by shopping your home and searching thrift stores or consignment shops.

Sources: I owned most of the books and accessories already.  My husband collects old geography textbooks and atlases which are great for styling 🙂 You can find them at antique shops or on Etsy.  The globes and ceramics are all from thrift stores or vintage shops and are relatively inexpensive and easy to find. I found the turtle shell at the Country Living Fair in Nashville but you can buy one here.  The bird watercolor print is by Christine Linstrom.   I bought the glass fishing float and the large branch on top of the shelf  at World Market.  They don’t seem to be available online, but perhaps they can still be found in store…?  The acrylic magazine holders are from Target and I love them!  The WWII vintage binoculars on the top of the shelf belonged to my husband’s grandfather.  I love displaying special things that have a family history.

Happy Styling!
